Like all 31 members of the sub class, the former No. 37297 (originally D6997), was released from Crewe Works in large logo livery. However, in comparison to the Eastfield and Cardiff allocations, and the RETB-fitted Class 37/0s that preceded them, this group did not universally receive names. Happily No. 37420 was one of the three that did, being dedicated The Scottish Hosteller on 28 June 1986 at the Inverness Open Day. After four and a half years working out of the Highland capital, it joined the Thornaby FCTY Trainload pool in May 1990 retaining its full Scottish regalia, albeit with a colourful Kingfisher logo on the cabside, until it became the last ‘37/4’ painted into the general user InterCity Mainline scheme the following December. Six years later it also became the last Type 3 to carry Regional Railways livery and it was switched off in July 2000. It wasn’t until April 1984 that it would be recalled to Doncaster for its large logo repaint, although this was quickly superseded by the colourful Network SouthEast image, which would be applied at Laira just over two years later. In February 1989 it was transferred to the departmental DWCA pool and with its NSE livery now obsolete and looking tired, the Plymouth depot repainted it back to BR blue, albeit with a Rail grey roof and black window surrounds. NSE-sized numbers were applied to the driver’s cabside with double arrows at the other end, while the nameplates were retained in their high position and not returned to the centre of the bodyside. This scheme would later become known as ‘Laira blue’ or ‘Departmental blue’ and was also briefly applied to 50037 in 1990 and then to 50008 in 1991, although notably Ramillies was the only one of the three to gain the DCE flash under the secondman’s window. 50019 was withdrawn with main generator damage while still wearing this paint job in September 1990. Happily it was sold to the Class 50 Locomotive Association the following May – the second of the type to be preserved – and after several years at Eridge on the Spa Valley Railway it moved to its current home, Dereham on the Mid-Norfolk Railway in May 1998, where it was a key member of the operational fleet, even running freight services on the 11-mile line. Since 2013 it has been out of action undergoing an extensive overhaul, which will see it return to its classic ‘Laira blue’ when completed.

Tech Specs:

Die-cast metal chassis

RP25-110 profile wheels, with options for P4/EM re-gauging

Separate etched/plastic details (grabs, steps, wipers, etc.)

Etched nameplates and crests (where applicable)

Interchangeable printed headcodes, including preservation variants

Detailed underframe with pipework and fittings

Fully sprung buffers, fine pipework, and screw couplings

Kinematic NEM couplers and mini-tension-locks

Working radiator fan with speed control

DCC 21 Pin MTC Interface

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

Accurascale BR Class 50 - Revised NSE (Dark Blue WofE Branding) 50029 Renown - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

After the first run release of 50017, one of the first pair of Class 50s to be released in the original Network SouthEast livery, the calls for the later version of the scheme have become deafening. 50029 Renown was the last of 14 examples to gain the same paint job as Royal Oak in June 1987, which it swapped for the revised darker blue variant in December 1989 courtesy of Laira depot. Named in October 1978 and refurbished in May 1982, it had no idea what colourful future awaited it when it was released from the ‘Plant’ in the then brash large logo look. In fact, 50029 was one of nine members of the type to receive two versions of ‘toothpaste’, with 50017 and 50048 both gaining all three! By its final repaint, the look of the revised NSE locomotives had settled down with a more consistent application, while the BR double arrow was finally ditched – an original condition of the new sector identity from ‘the board’ – in favour of the West of England route branding. By the time of its withdrawal with a seized power unit at the same time as 50046 Ajax in March 1992 it was one of the last of the six 100mph EE Type 4s still active, while 50030 Repulse was stopped just two weeks later. This left only 50007 Sir Edward Elgar, 50033 Glorious and 50050/D400 to represent the fleet. 50029 and 50030 were later sold to Operation Collingwood, a charity that had the ambitious goal of returning the locomotives to the main line with modern components while training engineering apprentices. The organisation had also acquired heavily stripped 50001/023/040/045 from Booth’s of Rotherham. When this collapsed in 2002, the newly formed Renown Repulse Restoration Group secured the two locomotives in better condition and moved them to Peak Rail at Rowsley. While they were quickly cosmetically restored, the pair have yet to turn a wheel in preservation, and 50030's rebuild is still several years from completion. Once this is finished, 50029 will receive another cosmetic refresh while the society assess the future of the locomotive.

Tech Specs:

Die-cast metal chassis

RP25-110 profile wheels, with options for P4/EM re-gauging

Separate etched/plastic details (grabs, steps, wipers, etc.)

Etched nameplates and crests (where applicable)

Interchangeable printed headcodes, including preservation variants

Detailed underframe with pipework and fittings

Fully sprung buffers, fine pipework, and screw couplings

Kinematic NEM couplers and mini-tension-locks

Working radiator fan with speed control

DCC 21 Pin MTC Interface

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

Accurascale BR Class 50 BR Blue Pre-Refurbishment 50035 Ark Royal - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

Illustrating the breadth of the Accurascale Class 50 tooling suite is 50035, one of three members of the fleet to gain plated headcode panels during 1977/8 with sealed beam marker lights along with Nos. 50003 and 50007, the latter at the No.1 end only. In January 1978 the ten-year old locomotive become the first of the newly-minted ‘Warship’ class to be honoured with nameplates following the easing of the ridiculous embargo on new namings. The Laira-allocated machine was dedicated Ark Royal after the Royal Navy’s flagship by its captain at Plymouth station, the new ’plates forcing the BR double arrows to be moved from the centre of the bodyside to the secondman’s cab side. The event also saw large replicas of the ship’s crests fitted above the nameplates. 50035 ran in this condition for several years, which included joining Old Oak Common in June 1980, before being called to Doncaster Works, emerging from the ‘Plant’ in March 1981 in large logo blue. It later gained the black roof version of the livery before being repainted in the original Network SouthEast scheme in July 1986, although not before running several turns in undercoat grey. Its BR employment came to an end in August 1990 and it was sold to the Fifty Fund the following April, the first Class 50 to be preserved with the official handover being performed by NSE Director Chris Green at the Old Oak Common open day. It was restarted for the first time in preservation exactly two years after its retirement and now returned to large logo ran the debut train of its new career at the Severn Valley Railway in October 1996. It is now part of the 50 Alliance fleet, still based at the SVR, and wears classic 1970s BR blue.

Tech Specs:

Die-cast metal chassis

RP25-110 profile wheels, with options for P4/EM re-gauging

Separate etched/plastic details (grabs, steps, wipers, etc.)

Etched nameplates and crests (where applicable)

Interchangeable printed headcodes, including preservation variants

Detailed underframe with pipework and fittings

Fully sprung buffers, fine pipework, and screw couplings

Kinematic NEM couplers and mini-tension-locks

Working radiator fan with speed control

DCC 21 Pin MTC Interface

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

Accurascale BR Class 50 Large Logo Grey Roof 50046 Ajax - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

The mighty Ajax, the son of Telamon, second only to Achilles in the Greek warrior hierarchy, equal of Trojan champion Hector and also the most famous Class 50 that ‘got away’, being scrapped at MC Metals, Glasgow, in June 1992. It had donated its low hours power unit to 50007 in December 1991, around five weeks after working its last train, after Sir Edward Elgar had been sidelined with a main generator flashover near Basingstoke in July of the same year. Rewinding to happier days, Laira-based 50046 had been dedicated in October 1978 after the Leander-class Frigate built in 1962. It was invited to Doncaster Works exactly four years later to take part in the refurbishment programme, being outshopped in large logo livery the following March, and arguably never looked better. Two years later in April 1985 it again received the attention of the painters, this time care of its Plymouth home, ahead of its twinning ceremony with HMS Ajax which would see it gain the smaller version of the ship’s crests. Despite their recent heavy overhaul, the four roof exhausts of the English Electric design were notorious for quickly turning the standard Rail grey roof filthy, leading the depot to effectively give up and paint the roof black to hide the oily deposits. 50046 was only the second to be so treated after 50042 Triumph, although the latter was quickly returned to grey following a visit to the ‘Plant’. Laira gave it a full repaint again in May 1987 following an F exam, although it notably did not receive the red bufferbeams that were applied to similar makeovers from the start of 1986. Over the next few years it would be allocated to the parcels and departmental sectors as well as NSE’s Thames and West of England passenger pools before it was officially retired in March 1992. Notably, both cabs survive, the No.1 end with owner Gary Hardings in Cornwall and the No.2 end at the Plym Valley Railway in Devon.

Tech Specs:

Die-cast metal chassis

RP25-110 profile wheels, with options for P4/EM re-gauging

Separate etched/plastic details (grabs, steps, wipers, etc.)

Etched nameplates and crests (where applicable)

Interchangeable printed headcodes, including preservation variants

Detailed underframe with pipework and fittings

Fully sprung buffers, fine pipework, and screw couplings

Kinematic NEM couplers and mini-tension-locks

Working radiator fan with speed control

DCC 21 Pin MTC Interface

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/6780/1313/files/50046web_a6935fa7-2d80-485c-bc97-56565d525c32.jpg?v=1752137330
br-class-50-laira-blue-50019-ramillies-dcc-sound
Accurascale BR Class 50 Laira Blue 50019 Ramillies - DCC Sound

Accurascale BR Class 50 Laira Blue 50019 Ramillies - DCC Sound - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

Named in April 1978 after the Revenge-class battleship that served from 1917-48, 50019 was one of the first six Class 50s to be refurbished in 1980, all being released in standard Rail blue.

DCC Sound fitted

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/6780/1313/files/50019web_d243b3f1-4d81-4ba1-88cb-c03829532911.jpg?v=1752137333
br-class-50-revised-nse-dark-blue-w-wofe-branding-50029-renown-dcc-sound
Accurascale BR Class 50 Revised NSE (Dark Blue WofE Branding) 50029 'Renown' - DCC Sound

Accurascale BR Class 50 Revised NSE (Dark Blue WofE Branding) 50029 'Renown' - DCC Sound - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

DCC Sound fitted

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/6780/1313/files/50029web_c96164ff-6fdb-40b2-afa1-b657678b08f9.jpg?v=1752137336
br-class-50-br-blue-pre-refurbishment-50035-ark-royal-dcc-sound
Accurascale BR Class 50 BR Blue Pre-Refurbishment 50035 Ark Royal - DCC Sound

Accurascale BR Class 50 BR Blue Pre-Refurbishment 50035 Ark Royal - DCC Sound - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

DCC Sound fitted

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/6780/1313/files/50035_web_c4a79e17-d50c-4f31-ace5-89085ff52c92.jpg?v=1752137339
br-class-50-large-logo-w-grey-roof-50046-ajax-dcc-sound
Accurascale BR Class 50 Large Logo Grey Roof 50046 Ajax - DCC Sound

Accurascale BR Class 50 Large Logo Grey Roof 50046 Ajax - DCC Sound - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

DCC Sound fitted

Five-pole motor with twin flywheels

All-wheel drive and pick-up

PowerPack (Stay Alive) capacitor for uninterrupted power

Directional lighting

Cab lights

Driver’s desk lights

Minimum radius: 438mm (2nd radius set-track)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0624/6780/1313/files/50046web_547f023c-f041-44af-8774-a658019c7691.jpg?v=1752137342
accurascale-acc3120-class-60-diesel-60051-mary-somerville-ttg-petroleum
Accurascale ACC3120 Class 60 Diesel 60051 Mary Somerville TTG Petroleum

Accurascale ACC3120 Class 60 Diesel 60051 Mary Somerville TTG Petroleum - Pre-Order Due Q4 2026

The Brush Class 60 was the last stand of the British designed and built diesel electric locomotive.
