With an end to end design, this is a layout that can find a home anywhere and is the ideal basis for a small shunting layout. We've deliberately not included any rolling stock, leaving you free to select your own wagons or coaches from the extensive Dapol range.
The motive power is provided by a Highly detailed Class 09 in Intercity livery "Dick Hardy"
This stunning replica of the Class 09 diesel shunter is the ideal addition to any O Gauge layout from late steam era to modern. It features lots of fine details which including sprung buffers, three link couplings and separately added detail parts. There are electrical pick-ups on all six wheels and having a chassis made of tungsten means it is a very reliable model to run on your model railway. A powerful five pole motor drives the six wheels which have been fitted with a rotating coupling rod to add to the detail. The finely applied paint scheme really makes the model stand out and ensures it is a must have for the model railway.
The British Rail Class 09 is a class of diesel-electric shunting locomotives introduced from 1959 as a higher-speed development of the successful Class 08. Built mainly by BR’s Crewe Works and Darlington Works, the locomotives were intended for duties that required shunting capability combined with the ability to travel at slightly higher speeds between yards and depots. Externally, the Class 09 closely resembles the Class 08, but it is geared for a higher maximum speed of around 27.5 mph, compared with 15 mph for the standard shunter.
Class 09 locomotives worked across several regions of Britain, handling yard shunting, trip freight, and station pilot duties, and later saw use in industrial and departmental service. Their straightforward mechanical design and rugged construction contributed to long working lives, with a number of examples surviving into preservation and some continuing to operate on heritage railways and in industrial roles.
For model railway layouts, the Class 09 is ideal for yards, depots, and short trip workings from the late 1950s onward. Its compact size, varied liveries, and long service life make it a versatile addition to layouts depicting both British Rail and preservation-era scenes.
